The Juki TL98Q with it’s large work area is perfect for sewing and quilting. This is a high quality sewing machine that gets great reviews and is perfect for intermediate to advanced sewers and particularly for those who are into quilting.
It is lightweight and readily portable and is made of aluminum die-casting to ensure industrial-quality sewing. It also has many exciting features normally only found in industrial machines to make your sewing even more pleasurable.
Now, lets take a look at what the Juki TL98Q has to offer:
Automatic thread trimmer – This Juki machine comes equipped with an automatic thread trimmer that simultaneously cuts the needle and bobbin threads at the sewing end. It uses a mechanism that is very similar to the thread trimmer on the industrial sewing machine whereby a foot pedal switch is used to activate the thread trimmer.
Thread tension scale - The machine is provided with the thread tension scale, which allows you to adjust the tension according to the thread and material to be used.
Presser foot pressure adjustment – The presser foot pressure can easily be adjusted to suit the fabric being sewn by turning a regulator found at the top of the sewing machine.
Presser foot knee lift lever – The knee lifter lever allows you to lift / lower the presser foot without using your hands.
12mm Extra high foot lift
Needle up/down button
Automatic needle threader - The push lever automatic needle threader easily threads the needle without eyestrain and with speed, allowing you to get started with sewing faster.
Easy bobbin replacement - A new bobbin case latch and an enlarged bobbin case area make it easier to remove and replace the bobbin
Extended flat bed - This creates a large work area and is perfect for quilting and other large sewing jobs. The extended flat bed extends the work area to a huge 23 inches so that you have increased maneuverability when sewing with large pieces of fabric. There’s nothing more frustrating that having weighty fabric falling down off the table constantly and making sewing difficult!
Other features include:
Comes with HA-type needles.
The arm and bed is constructed of aluminum die-casting.
Large work area with much wider handling area than conventional sewing machines.
Longer arm and sewing bed to make it easier to sew quilts
High sewing speeds up to 1,500 stitches per minute

What makes this a great quilting machine?
It comes with two types of quilting feet supplied as standard accessories with this sewing machine. The 1/5 Quilting Foot is used for basic quilting and the 1/4 quilting foot for precision sewing with 1/4″ inch stitch width. The quilting feet are designed for free motion quilting and free-hand embroidery.
The feed dog on the Juki TL98Q can be raised and lowered simply by pressing a switch. When quilting, the drop feed makes it simple for you to sew curved stitches.
The even feed foot ensures that this sewing machine is able to create beautiful seams even when sewing fabrics that don’t feed easily such as georgette and velvet, as well as heavy weight materials such as leather.
A few more facts about the Juki TL98Q…
This is a single needle, lockstitch machine. Lockstitch refers to the way the stitch is created. Two threads, one top and one bottom, entwine together in the hole in the fabric through which they pass while the stitch is being created. This is the way that most sewing machines create a stitch.
The Juki TL98Q is perfect not only for quilting, but also for tailoring, dressmaking and home décor pieces. It comes with a variety of presser feet as you’ve seen which make sewing a pleasure as well as increasing efficiency and speed.

What do I think of the Juki TL98Q?
I want one! I think that for anyone sewing serious projects – ie quilts, curtains, upholstery, leather or other heavy fabrics – then I am certain that this sewing machine will make them very happy. The size of the work area, the extra long arm and the massive sewing speed of 1500 stitches a minute make this machine one that definitely should not be overlooked!
What others are saying
The Juki TL98Q has a 5 out of 5 star rating on Amazon and gets great reviews generally. Here are a few comments to date:
I really love this machine. I got it about three weeks ago and I was so pleasantly surprised by it’s performance.
I highly recommend this to anyone who sews a lot or who works in the fashion industry but just doesn’t have room for an industrial at home!!!
It is fast and the stitches are solid.
The threading is smooth, and downright flawless.
The price is fantastic if you consider what you have to pay for an industrial machine, or even a brand new Bernina.
Machine is very straight forward in its use. Simple to operate and very sturdy.
What a performer. The speed is incredible, powerful, yet easy to control.
I have found this machine selling for over $1000 from various resellers. It is available at the time of writing this review for less than $900 from Amazon which is a pretty good deal. It’s also available at various prices from Ebay. Click here to go see the Juki TL98Q at Amazon.

Carry handle
The Janome Magnolia 7330 is a computerized sewing machine and as you’ve seen, it combines lots of sewer friendly features in a wonderful machine. The 7330 really is a push button machine as the only knob on this sewing machine is the hand crank.
The 7330 has 30 built in stitches, which include 6 one step buttonholes that will sew a buttonhole to fit your button perfectly every time and the needle position is variable with 3 needle positions.
Great news for all users, but beginners in particular, is that his Janome sewing machine is just about ‘jam proof’. It won’t even jam if you sew off the edge of the fabric.
It has accessory storage in the extension arm – that’s the piece that comes off to reveal the free arm.
The stitch chart on the front of the Janome 7330 tells you which presser foot you need to use for any particular stitch. As seen on the image to the left, the presser feet are indicated by letters under the stitches and the snap on presser feet make it super easy to change presser foot on this sewing machine.
The Janome 7330 comes with 4 snap on, low shank presser feet:
General Purpose Foot
Zipper
Satin Stitch
Automatic Buttonhole Foot
It also has three levels of presser foot height to accommodate quilting projects as well as thick fabrics.

How heavy is the Janome 7330?
The 7330 weighs in at 25lb
…and what about the warranty?
The 7330 has a limited 25 year warranty.
What’s my impression of the Janome 7330?
I’ve loved everything I’ve read about this machine. I haven’t seen anything negative about it. The comments about it’s performance and stability are consistent. I think that for a beginner this would be the ideal sewing machine as it is easy to use and it doesn’t play up! There is nothing more frustrating for even an experienced seamstress than a sewing machine that has finicky tension or that jams constantly – never mind the frustration that it would cause a beginner.
I think that it’s features and ease of use outweigh the fact that it only has 30 stitches and 4 presser feet included (compared to some other cheaper machines that have more of both). If I were in the market for a new sewing machine in this price range – I think that it would be the one.
What others are saying
The Janome 7330 Magnolia has a grand total of 5 stars out of a possible 5 stars as rated by users of the machine on Amazon (I told you there was nothing bad!). Everyone seems to love this machine. Here are some comments to date:
After seeing the Janome and the Brother in action, I came home with the Janome 7330
This machine is AWESOME.
This is a wonderful home workhorse
It punched through 6+ layers of denim easily
I’m an experienced sewer, and this is my third machine…I’m very happy with it
It seems to be a machine that’s designed to let you concentrate on the next step of your project, rather than having to troubleshoot the machine itself constantly. I’m happy
I really love this machine. I can’t say that enough
If your budget is $300-400, this is the machine for you!
Any complaints?
Not really. There was one complaint about the company from someone who had a faulty machine and then had problems getting it rectified, but with regard to the machine itself there don’t appear to be any!
How much can I expect to pay for the Janome 7330 Magnolia?
As you’ve probably realized while reading this review, the 7330 is just under $400 with free shipping from Amazon which makes it a pretty good deal. It is also available for varying prices from Ebay.

What about the warranty?
I can’t find any mention of a warranty – but for $40 or so, is it worth worrying about?
…and the price?
The Michley LSS-505 sells at under $50. At the time of writing the cheapest was at Amazon – especially when you take into account that this little sewing machine qualifies for free shipping!
What do I think of the Michley LSS-505?
I think that this is a great little sewing machine for beginners or those with a very limited budget. It’s ideal for anyone just wanting to do some mending or craft projects or if you need a machine that’s really light and portable. It would also be ideal for children to learn to sew or to use for craft projects. However, if you are wanting to do more than just some occasional basic sewing and mending, I personally would suggest looking at a machine with a bit more to offer.
Pros:
It’s an electric machine and simple to use.
It’s available at a very affordable price.
It gets mostly great reviews.
It’s perfect for beginners or those wanting to only do a bit of mending
It’s very lightweight and portable
Cons:
It is not really suited to more complicated sewing or to those wanting to do a lot of sewing
More complicated sewing jobs would take more time than if using a more sophisticated machine as jobs such as button holes and threading are going to be more time consuming due to a lack of automation.
Because it is lightweight it is likely to move around the table if sewing anything a little heavy
What others are saying
Here are a few of the comments to date from users of the Michley lil sew & sew:
I don’t know what all the bad reviews are for – this machine matches my mother’s full sized Singer machine!
I just wanted to hem my boy’s pants which are always too long, and it works for that.
First off this machine is a little version of the big ones and the price is well worth it
Perfect little sewing machine for beginners who just want to sew a patch on or a hem in their t-shirts
It works very well, did all that I need to do
What a sweet little machine.
Users on Amazon have given this Michley sewing machine a total of 3.5 stars out of 5 . To read more reviews of this machine from actual users, Amazon is the best place to go – Click here to read more…
Any complaints?
There are some complaints. One seems to be the lack of instructions that come with this machine, however those who have mentioned that have also mentioned that they found the video on YouTube (above) was enough to get them going. There’s also a couple of complaints about it not working well with heavy fabrics and that’s hardly surprising in my view. As usual there are also complaints about bobbins and tension that are possibly user generated, especially with it being very definitely a sewing machine for beginners.
This is a great little beginners sewing machine. It is very affordable at under $100 and gets good reviews. If you are looking for a basic beginners sewing machine or a machine to use for repairs, then this Singer sewing machine should be on your list.
Ok – what are the features of this Singer 1507 sewing machine?
The Singer 1507 is an 8 stitch machine.
This machine has eight basic, but very useful stitches as shown on the stitch chart to the left. The stitches as you can see include basic button holes, straight stitching and zigzag. These 8 stitches allow for most basic sewing tasks including repairs and mending.
Four step button holes.
Button holes can be created with four simple steps on this sewing machine. It’s not a quick and painless as some of the more expensive machines, which basically do the buttonhole in one step and without any need for the user to do anything. But it is easy. If you’re not planning on doing lots of sewing that requires lots of buttonholes, then this isn’t going to be a problem for you.
This video shows what is involved in sewing a 4 step button hole. It’s pretty simple and once done you just cut between the stitching on the two sides of the button hole, to actually create the hole for the button to go through.
3 Needle Positions
This means that the needle can be repositioned from it’s normal centered position, to either the left or the right. This provides flexibility and is useful for such applications as sewing in a zipper where the needle needs to be moved to the right or left to use a zipper foot and get in nice and close to the zipper.
Horizontal Threading for smoother stitching
Easy bobbin winder
Free Arm
Adjustable Presser Foot
This allows you to adjust the presser foot to allow for the sewing of heavy fabrics such as denim.
This sewing machine also has built in storage for all those sewing bits and pieces such as bobbins, needles and other essentials as well as a built in carry handle providing portability if you need to move your sewing machine from one place to another.
What size and weight is this Singer sewing machine?
This sewing machine measures 15 x 8 x 12 inches and weighs in at 17 pounds
What’s included?
The Singer 1507 8-Stitch Sewing Machine comes with:
Canvas Cover
Manual
A pack of needles
4 bobbins
Standard presser foot
Buttonhole foot
Button sewing foot
Zipper foot
Bottle of oil
Feed dog cover
2 spool caps
A stitching guide
One screwdriver
A seam ripper
Lint brush
What about the warranty?
This sewing machine comes with a 25 years limited warranty.
…and the price?
This sewing machine sells for under $90 at both Amazon and Compuplus. At the time of writing Compuplus was a couple of dollars cheaper, but with free shipping on the Singer 1507, Amazon may still be the best buy .
What do I think of the Singer 1507?
My opinion, is that this is a great little sewing machine and at under $100, it is at a good price for the beginner wanting to do some basic sewing and mending.
Pros:
It’s an electric machine which means it’s simple to use.
It’s available at an affordable price.
It gets mostly great reviews.
It’s perfect for beginners.
It’s lightweight and great for those who have to carry it around.
Cons:
It is less suited to those wanting to sew more complicated tasks
It may not be suitable for very sheer fabrics
No automatic speed control
More complicated sewing jobs would take more time than if using a more sophisticated machine as jobs such as button holes and threading are going to be more time consuming due to a lack of automation.
What others are saying
Here’s a few comments to date from users of the Singer 1507 sewing machine:
The manual is super easy to understand
This is a good all-purpose, low-cost household machine
Love this little machine. Easy to thread. Runs smoothly
I ordered this machine as a gift for a 14 yr old; she loves sewing and liked it very much
I was pleasantly surprised at the little extras it features
I have sewed tons on it. Baby diapers, blankets, burp rags, baby clothes. Hemmed jeans, made roman blinds, crib sheets
There are a few complaints, but not too many. Most seem to be about tension and the threading which is a bit weird as the majority of other reviewers have actually praised these features as being simple. This as usual, may possibly be faulty machines or as is often the case – faulty users who fail to read instruction manuals…
This is the Brother CS6000I computerized sewing machine.
At the time of writing, this is the best selling sewing machine on Amazon, which is pretty impressive! I also believe that it’s one of the best sewing machines for beginners. That’s why I’ve decided to make this the first of my sewing machine reviews. This sewing machine has to be absolutely the best sewing machine available for under $200.
The Brother CS6000i gets great reviews from beginners and more experienced seamstresses alike. When you compare this sewing machine to other machines in this price range, it becomes clear that this is the best value sewing machine for it’s price anywhere. If you are looking for an affordable sewing machine with the features of an expensive sewing machine then this machine should definitely be on your list!
So let’s get on with the review. What features does this Brother Sewing Machine have?
Automatic Needle Threader – This feature saves time and makes the job of threading the needle on your machine much simpler.
Automatic Button Holer – This means that the machine does all the work. All you need to do is to set which button hole you want to use on the LCD screen, it tells you which presser foot to put on and away it goes – perfect button holes quickly and easily.
LCD Screen for stitch selection – The Brother CS6000i has sixty different stitches which include various quilting, utility, heirloom and decorative stitch functions as well as an extra wide 7mm Zig Zag stitch.
Start/Stop Button – This allows you to sew without using the foot pedal, however the foot pedal is still included and can be used by those who prefer it.
Sewing Speed Controller
The speed controller means that you can select your sewing speed, allowing you go as fast or slow as you wish. This is a great feature, particularly for times when a very slow speed is required – I know that the jerky foot on the foot pedal has caused me a few headaches in the past! Where’s that unpicker?…
Free-arm – That’s the feature that allows you to sew tubes easily. It means that you can remove most of the sewing bed (the flat surface that the material sits on when you’re sewing), leaving a smaller area to sew on that doesn’t go all the way down to the table surface, allowing you to sew, for example, the hem on sleeves or trouser legs and other tube type shapes easily. You really don’t ever want to do without a free arm!
Clear Bobbin Cover
Six Point Feed Dogs
1-touch start/stop and reverse functions
Maximum sewing speed 850 stitches per minute
Variable needle position
Second spool pin for twin needle sewing
Built in manual thread cutter on the left side of the sewing machine
Vertical thread delivery
Presser foot lever control with 3 height settings
The Brother CS6000i is a computerized sewing machine
The Brother CS6000i has 60 stitch functions as in the diagram to the left. It also has 7 styles of 1-step buttonholes and comes with 9 snap-on presser feet.
Presser feet are the metal (or plastic) feet that hold the fabric flat down against the feed dogs that move the fabric forward while it is being sewn. Snap on presser feet do exactly that – snap on – rather than screwing on like the presser feet on older types of sewing machines, making it quicker and easier to change the feet on your sewing machine. To change the presser foot, the push of a button located behind the presser foot releases the presser foot. Then simply place the presser foot that you wish to use under the holder, lower the lever and the new presser foot snaps into place. Voila!
The Brother CS6000i uses low shank presser feet, which is great as it means that you can also use generic low shank presser feet to achieve all sorts of sewing tasks on your sewing machine.
The Brother CS6000i comes with the following 9 presser feet included:
Zigzag – also referred to as a General Purpose presser foot. This is the foot that comes with all sewing machines as standard.
Overcasting – for more professional looking seams with protection against fraying edges.
Button Fitting Foot – sew buttons on to garments using your sewing machine and the button fitting foot instead of sewing them on by hand.
Walking Foot – a presser foot with feed dogs for better fabric control when quilting or working with thick layers of material.
Quilting Foot – Spring activated quilting foot can be used for free motion quilting, free motion embroidery, or for darning.
Buttonhole Foot – makes buttonholes automatically. Normal sized buttons are placed in the back of the buttonhole foot and then the machine uses the button as a guide for making a perfectly sized buttonhole using one of 7 different button hole styles. Clever huh?
Zipper Foot
Monogramming Foot
Blind Stitch Foot
As already mentioned it has an easy to use, computerized stitch selection on the LCD screen.
There is an illustrated stitch guide on the side of the machine (as in the image above) to help you to choose the appropriate stitch for your job.
It also sports auto threading, a tension control dial, and an auto-set drop-in bobbin.
One Step, Quick set drop in Bobbin
There are two threads required to be used on a sewing machine. The top thread that comes from the reel and the bottom thread that comes from the bobbin.
The drop in bobbin is the most user friendly, easy to use bobbin set up you can get. It’s simple and saves time and frustration as there is no mucking around trying to get the bobbin carrier out of the sewing machine and then trying to remember which way the bobbin goes and trying to put the bobbin and carrier back.
If you’ve ever used a machine with a traditional bobbin set up, you’ll be familiar with having to turn the drive wheel by hand slowly to try to pick up the bobbin thread – there is no need to do this with the drop in bobbin. This is a one step process – just keep hold of the end of the thread and drop the bobbin in. There’s even a printed guide on the machine to remind you how to insert the bobbin. It’s simple and even if you’re completely new to sewing and sewing machines, you’ll have no problems following the instructions to load the bobbin on this machine. It really does saves time and frustration levels…..
This video explains the features of the Brother CS6000i. When you’re researching and considering ordering online, video is the next best thing to test driving yourself. When you see the projects that are being created with this sewing machine on the video, it is easy to see that this sewing machine over delivers for it’s price and is comparable to many more expensive machines.
It can be operated with either a foot pedal or a 1-touch button for start, stop, and reverse stitching and can operate at speeds of up to 850 stitches per minute.
Dual LED light to illuminate the area that you’re sewing and keep you out of the dark.
The Brother CS6000i has a built in handle for easy portability.
This sewing machine is self maintaining, meaning that you never need to oil it.
What accessories come with the Brother CS6000i?
As seen in the video, it comes with a clip on wide table accessory which creates a nice big flat surface for those larger jobs such as quilting as well as:
A hard cover case to protect your sewing machine while in storage (Note:This is not a carry case. It is a dust/protection cover only. It has no handle or base and it designed to protect your machine when not in use. If you require a carry case, the Brother 5300 Universal Sewing Machine Carrying Casecan be purchased for about $25.)
Seam ripper
Bobbins
Needle set
Extra spool pin
Twin needle
Cleaning brush
Screw driver
9 snap-on presser feet
Power cord
Manual
What is the size and weight?
This machine measures 9-3/4 inches wide by 9-3/5 inches deep by 12-1/2 inches high and weighs in at 16 pounds. The machine is lightweight and has a built in handle for portability.
Does it come with a warranty?
The Brother CS6000i comes with a limited 25-year warranty
What do I think about the Brother CS6000i?
As I said at the beginning of this review, I think this machine is the best value for money for a machine under $200 – hands down! It is a sewing and embroidery machine that has plenty of useful features and would be perfect for someone who’s sewing is in the beginner to intermediate levels.
It is possible that if you were sewing a large, heavy item such as a quilt, the light weight of the machine may mean that the machine would move. This could be remedied by placing your sewing machine on a rubber mat to stop it from sliding or moving on the table.
When you consider that this machine comes with 9 presser feet, the extra wide work table and the dust cover – these added extras that are thrown in by Brother make the price of this sewing machine unbelievable. With almost all sewing machines in this price range you would have to buy these separately.
If I was looking for a beginner to intermediate level sewing machine, this sewing machine would definitely be on my list. Being easy to use, reliable and affordable, it truly is one of the best sewing machines for beginners on the market today.
What others are saying
This sewing machine receives rave reviews from the majority of it’s users, with reviews from over 500 people having given it an average of 4.5 stars out of a possible 5 stars on Amazon.
Here are some comments to date:
“This machine represents the most incredible value-for-money on the market today. It is very, very easy to use, and the manual is exceptionally helpful.”
“I wanted a mid-range sewing machine with some flexibility, and this is the machine. I sews quickly and flawlessly, and is super easy to learn.”
“This machine is very light and easy to carry around – that’s a big plus for someone like me who has to sew at the kitchen table.”
“…sewing with this one is a joy.”
“I have used computerized machines before, but this one was unlike anything I have ever seen. It is absolutely amazing!”
Any complaints?
The majority of feedback on this machine is extremely positive. The reviews that I came across that weren’t so positive seem to be less about how the machine operates, and more about the marketing or advertising of it with one person having ordered it to use in Australia not realizing that the difference in power supply would render the sewing machine unusable.
There were (as always when there are a large number of reviews) a few faulty products and possibly some faulty users? Who knows, but generally the reviews are from very happy owners and users.
How much can I expect to pay for the Brother CS6000i?
I’ve found this Brother sewing machine available for sale for prices as much as $400 and down to about $170. At the time of writing, Target and Amazon both have this machine for less than $170 with Amazon being a couple of dollars cheaper, but because Amazon offers free shipping on this sewing machine, it currently the better deal.
Where can you read more reviews on the Brother CS6000i?
